Backwash in Environment

Moana Backwash

Sometimes it is difficult to have the eye of a designer and visualize the artwork in your home. Here we see a beautiful placement of Moana Backwash in a client's home environment. Adding a splash of color and an original art piece, that could move if needed, was the client's desire. Clearly she made the right choice!

New Body of Work

A new body of work, yet to be titled, is underway in JP's studio. During his residency at the Museum of Glass in January, JP experimented with Chase Jarvis' portraits (of both Leigh and JP). He is now in the lengthy and taxing cold working stage, beginning to figure out the next phase of design. We hope to release where this work will be displayed and exhibited within the next few months. Stay tuned!

JP's Residency at the Museum of Glass

JP Canlis and renowned photographer Chase Jarvis unite creative forces and play with a new concept in glass at MOG.  Come watch JP January 15-19, 2014, as he pushes the boundaries of glass during his Visiting Artist Residency at the Museum of Glass.  He will be working with a stellar team in the museum's Hot Shop during the 5-day residency, creating a brand new series of work.

You are invited to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of JP at work, as the entire process will be open to the public. Viewing hours are Wednesday-Saturday from 10am-5pm and Sunday from 12pm-5pm. On Sunday, JP will be giving a public lecture about his work.

The Museum of Glass will be broadcasting the residency live on their website, which will be viewable HERE. Viewers can write in and ask JP or the museum's team questions while watching them work live.

We hope to see you there!

New Installation at Northeastern

JP Canlis created a custom glass installation for Pacific Northwest newbie, Northeastern University-Seattle. The East Coast based university opened its doors in the South Lake Union area in January 2013. Canlis Glass was commissioned to create an installation that would embody the culture and community of the Seattle area. JP was able to create a sculpture, Connectivity, that brings these general themes together in the realm of art that Seattle holds so dear; glass. His seven-piece installation, of hand-blown and hot-sculpted glass molecules, floats above the space in the campus entryway. Their presence in the building draws the viewer in and illuminates the vision of the campus.

JP and his assistants created Connectivity over the course of 5 months to completion. The process of blowing the glass in a hot shop, refining the pieces in the cold shop along with establishing the seven different molecules as singular sculptures was a rewarding and challenging experience for JP and his team. The entire installation spans a space of 9 feet squared and is suspended 7 1/2 feet from the ceiling in the entryway of the building.

JP's creative ability to form a concept, display it on paper, skillfully form the pieces and see it through to the installation day is what defines his as an incredible glass artist. Previous to Connectivity, he has created numerous custom installation projects such Insignificance Bamboo, Raindrop Chandelier, and Wheat Installation. He realm of original thought and skill give him the ability to envision an installation and create it.

Wheat Installation to SOFA

Wheat Installations are ready for SOFA! The months of ongoing pulling cane and flame working for SOFA Chicago are almost finished. PISMO Gallery will be representing JP’s work this fall at the prestigious art exposition from November 1st-4th. Over four days, 100 galleries will present artists from around the world.

The presentation of JP’s Wheat Installations is 16 years in the making. He originally came up with the concept of glass wheat for his senior project at Alfred University in the mid 90s. Since then his knowledge of glass has grown to allow him to create a serene interpretation of a cross section of a wheat field. The varying dimensions of his installations give the imagination room to dream of glistening acres of wheat.

SOFA Expo Chicago will be held on November 1st-4th, 2012 in Chicago at the historic Navy Pier. Tickets and special viewings are still available to purchase at www.sofaexpo.com
